CEDAR CITY – Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and Mayor Gerald R. Sherratt shared the responsibility of cutting the ribbon at the grand opening of the Comfort Inn and Suites Friday, welcoming the new business to Cedar City. Ed Patel and Brett Maru holding the ribbon while Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and Mayor Gerald R. Sherratt cuts the ribbon at the grand opening of Comfort Inn & suites. Brett Maru, managing member and co-owner of the hotel, said it was a “privilege and an honor” to have Huntsman take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

During his speech to Cedar City residents and hotel employees, Huntsman said he’s glad the owners of the hotel, who also own 37 other hotels throughout Utah, decided to open the Comfort Inn and Suites in Cedar City. Governor recognized Dasharath Patel, Ed Patel’s uncle who was the first Indian who came to Utah in 1977 for business. For years, Dasharath Patel provided valuable guidance to Ed in the hotel / motel business Huntsman said the new hotel would benefit the Cedar City tourism industry, especially through the summer festival season. During his speech, Mayor Sherratt said the new addition to the hotel industry is another representation of growth in Cedar City.

“Everyone knows tourism is a vital part of the economy in Cedar City,” he said. “We hope our tourism continues to grow so that we can keep all of our motels full all of the time.” Huntsman said the continuing business growth, like the new hotel, is a good example of Utah’s strong economy.

“The state of Utah is doing pretty well economically,” he said. “We may have a storm around us but we are doing reasonably well.”

The additions of new business will contribute to growth as well as an increase in the tourism industry throughout Utah, Huntsman said. “Growth is going to be a constant part of our existence,” he said. Gov. asked Ketan Sharma, owner of multiple hotels and restaurants to open Indian restaurants in Utah.

Governor and Ketan Sharma Ed Patel is the primary owner of the Comfort Inn and Suite, and is considered the “mastermind” behind the group’s success within the hotel industry in Utah, Maru said. Ed Patel, owns more than 30 hotels in the state of Utah, and a couple more in Arizona, Colorado, California and Kansas. Ed is currently building a 126 room La Quinta Inn & Suites in Chino, California and similar to this hotel in Vernal, Utah.

Back in the early 90’s, while on a family trip to the Zion National Park, Ed realized the massive demand for hotels in the Utah area, when he couldn’t find a even one hotel room available for him and his family. The Patels had to come back to Vegas for a room, and were forced to take a day trip to Zion. That’s when he knew he needed to start looking for hotels in Utah. After six months, Ed got his first hotel, “Sands” in St. George, Utah. The Sands hotel was purchased for $350,000 and Ed made $50,000 down and asked the Seller to finance the remaining cost.
Ed Patel is blessed with a great vision for the business, which has helped him in acquiring great locations. With God’s blessings, everything he has touched has turned into gold. The 18 years of success that Ed has had in his various business ventures has attracted doctors, attorneys and business entrepreneurs to invest with him. Ed has found a great loyal, smart and hardworking partner in Brett Maru. Mr. Maru’s wealth of experience in software development, sales and marketing, and customer service combined with degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Jurist Doctor brings amazing value to the partnership. Ed Patel, his brother Vic Patel also own the Super 8 Hotel in Cedar City, he said. Maru said the tourism industry in Southern Utah is strong, which is part of the reason the owners decided to open another hotel in the area. Ed also owns La Quinta Inn & Suites license in Cedar City, once City completes its general planning, Ed Patel will start construction, said Maru. “It’s not just the hotel,” he said. “We also like the surrounding area, so people can come here and stay and enjoy beauty of Utah.”
Mayor Gerald Sherratt did the ground breaking of Comfort Inn & Suite on Jan 5, 2007 despite heavy snow. Mayor Sherratt provided valuable guidance and visited property during construction. Ed Patel offer Ganesha to Mayor.

The owners gave appropriate gift of Ganesha to Mayor for his support and guidance. Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles, patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. He is honored at the start of rituals and ceremonies and invoked as Patron of Letters during writing sessions. The Comfort Inn & Suites project was completed in one short year with the help of General Contractor Jay Gutowski of Mountain View and the sub contractors who assisted on this project. Jay Gutowski, general contractor for the project, said after spending eight months building and creating the new hotel, he is glad with the way it turned out and with the hotel’s gaining success. “They put a lot of money into it to have this finished product,” he said. “This place brings a good look to Cedar City.”

The hotel offers spacious and elegant lobby area with fireplace, massage therapy, business center, hardwired & wireless free high‐speed Internet access; free in‐room Comfort Sunshine® Roast coffee, USA Today or The Wall Street Journal, Indoor Pool and Spa, Guest Laundry. The owners offered a small token of appreciation a sculpture of Saraswati. Saraswati is the Hindu Goddess of knowledge, music, and all of the creative arts. “Saraswati which brings peace, prosperity and harmony” said Mr. Maru.
